The first case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Mid-Michigan, so it’s important to take steps to protect yourself.
If you live in Saginaw County you can get your home sprayed to kill mosquitoes for free.
“We have 21 trucks with spray units. So at a given time we normally do three to four townships a night,” said Bill Stanuszek, director of the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission.
Stanuszek has been fighting the good fight against diseased mosquitoes for 15 years. He said to further protect county residents they even make house calls.
“It will be after dark because that’s when mosquitoes are at their peak flight and mosquitoes need to be flying for this to work,” Stanuszek said.
A crew will show up to your property and personalize the pesticide treatment up to two times a year, schedule permitting.
“We can set our flow rate based on the dial right here. We’ve got our on switch for different flow rates and we’ve got our trigger that releases the product,” said Ryan DuRussel, field foreman.
Stanuszek said the pesticide they use has a low level of toxicity to mammals. They disperse a small, target amount making the impact very minimal as it quickly evaporates.
“We don’t want that product to do anything more than it’s meant to do at that point in time when it comes out the nozzle,” he said.
If you want Saginaw County’s commission to spray your home, you need to make an appointment.
Bay County’s Mosquito Control also offers one priority spray per year to residents.
